Your Cochrane Choice for BOTOX®!
What is BOTOX®
Botox® is the trade name for Botulinum Toxin. It is a purified neuromodulator protein that is injected into muscles and acts by blocking the neurotransmission of the nerves to the muscles. Essentially, Botox® temporarily relaxes muscles, decreasing contractions.
Cosmetic BOTOX® treatment
Botox® is often injected into various points on the face to block nerve signals to certain muscles. In doing so, movement is limited, which reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles and creates an overall smoother appearance. Dentists know better than anyone else what makes a great smile and therefore, they can perform cosmetic Botox® treatments since they are highly trained in facial structure and facial anatomy.
Examples of cosmetic Botox® treatment include:
- Wrinkle Reduction: Botox® is often injected between the eyes (glabella), around the eyes (crow’s feet), and around the mouth (frown lines).
- Gummy Smile reduction: Traditional treatment for a high lip line would be surgery. With Botox® however, dentists can help raise your gingival height to meet the lip line. With some Botox® combined with lip fillers, the muscles that surround the lip are weakened so they cannot raise the lip as high as before.
- Smile Symmetry Correction: With Botox® in conjunction with a crown or bridge for example, a more symmetrical dental aesthetic can be established for your smile.
- Jawline Reduction
Therapeutic BOTOX® Treatment
Botox® can be used for more than just cosmetic reasons. Dentists can also use Botox® for therapeutic purposes. Examples include:
- Complications associated with tight jaw muscles, like TMJ pain
- Grinding and clenching (Bruxism)
- Treatment of chronic headaches and migraines
- Prevention of daytime Teeth Damage
